FISHING INFO
Experience the best in Long Island Offshore Fishing
All of our trips are focused on offshore fishing and the pursuit of big game species including tuna, mahi mahi and marlin.
Although tuna are usually going to be our primary target species, during the summer months we often catch other pelagic species like mahi mahi or marlin, usually on the troll.
We utilize a wide variety of tactics, and they tend to vary over the course of the season. This includes:
- Trolling - This is always a successful way to cover ground and locate our target species, particularly early in the season. In addition to tuna, we often raise marlin and mahi on the troll.
- Dragger (squid boats) Fishing - Some of the most exciting fishing can occur when draggers are fishing for squid, as tuna and other big game will follow these boats around, looking for a cheap meal. Once we’ve found a squid boat, heavy chumming will often create a feeding frenzy under Fin Alley, leading to fast and furious action.
- Lobster Pot Fishing - We target pelagic fish that are attracted to lobster pots.
- Live Bait - There are days when they will only hit live bait, and we will always be ready with a live well full.
Fin Alley Fishing Charters always provides any live or dead bait needed at no additional cost, so our customers will never spend part of their day watching us catch bait. We cut no corners in pursuit of big tuna, so if our game plan for that day includes live bait we will have a livewell full, and when fishing with dead bait we will always have fresh ballyhoo or other premium bait - never refrozen.
Target Species when Fishing Offshore
Long Island, New York:
Bluefin Tuna
The largest tuna species is found in our waters throughout the season, and we often encounter them in very shallow water - sometimes just off the beach!
They are prized around the world for their meat Bluefin can truly reach enormous sizes - the New York state record is 1,071lbs, caught off Long Island in 1977.
Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin tuna are found worldwide in temperate and tropical seas, and are fairly common offshore in New York.
We catch a lot of yellowfin tuna on our shorter trips, particularly in the troll. Like all tuna, they are extremely strong fighting fish even at smaller sizes, but we do catch them up to 150lbs - so hopefully you’re ready!
Big Eye Tuna
This lesser known tuna species is a prized catch, and we usually encounter them in the canyons that line the continental shelf.
These are typically large tuna, and last year’s largest Big Eye on Fin Alley was over 270lbs. For a chance at a Big Eye, our overnight canyon trips would be the best bet.
Albacore
Although known as a smaller tuna, we often encounter “jumbo” albacore in the 50-60lb range.
Albacore are most commonly found in the canyons, so they do often require a longer trip than our typical full day trip.
